Mark T Barnard

Sharing the performance experience with musicians of all ages, Mark Barnard serves as a music educator, educational composer, conductor, clinician, and performer. He has directed youth, school, church, and community ensembles in California, Ohio, and Oregon and served as adjunct faculty at the University of Dayton, Wright State University, and on the summer faculty of the Idyllwild School of Music and the Arts.

As a composer, arranger, and music editor, Mr. Barnard has created numerous instrumental, choral and keyboard publications. At Lorenz, Mr. Barnard served as executive editor of Unity Music Press, editor of the Sacred Organ Journal, and as an editor and contributing editor for methods and publications in the Lorenz and Heritage Music Press catalogs. In addition to appearing as a clinician and presenter at regional and national conferences, Mr. Barnard was commissioned to compose Trust in God (10/1269U) for the International Thomas Merton Conference and My Heart Is Ready (10/1398U) for the National Pastoral Musicians National Convention. Mr. Barnard's recent educational orchestra compositions have received performances at The Midwest Clinic and the Interlochen Center for the Arts.

A native of Santa Monica, Mark Barnard was a band and orchestra student of the esteemed music educator and pedagogue Gerald E. Anderson. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Southern California, earning degrees in both Music Education and Humanities. At the USC‑Thornton School of Music, he was a private student of conductor and arranger William A. Schaefer. Mr. Barnard received the Master of Music in Performance from the New England Conservatory, serving as NEC Symphony principal bassist under Gunther Schuller and studying and performing under conductor and composer Daniel Pinkham. Mr. Barnard also studied for four seasons as a member of the orchestra at the Los Angeles Philharmonic Institute under artistic directors Leonard Bernstein, Daniel Lewis, and Michael Tilson Thomas.

In addition to his educational and professional orchestral experience, Mr. Barnard was a member of the administrative and artistic staff with Michael Tilson Thomas that launched the New World Symphony, America's Orchestral Academy, which is dedicated to preparing graduates of schools of music and conservatories for careers in symphony orchestras and professional ensembles.

Mr. Barnard is currently Director of Instrumental Music at St. Mary's School in Medford, Oregon, teaching orchestra and band grades 6–12, and a member of the Rogue Valley Symphony. Mark and Jodi Barnard and their musical family reside in Ashland, Oregon.
